Position Title: Sergeant - PREA/Self Harm Prevention

Work schedule: Full-time; 8hrs

Position Summary:

Reports to the designated supervisor.  Directly supervises designated employees. Responsible for the coordination of self-harm prevention training and education to include suicide prevention in compliance with Management & Training Corporation (MTC) and Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) directives.

Essential Functions:

  1. Plan, develop, coordinate and conduct training to include, self-harm prevention, suicide prevention, and other training in compliance with MTC and TDCJ directives.
  2. Provide for the care, custody and adherence to rules and regulations of Inmates assigned to specific work areas.
  3. Identify, track and monitor at-risk Inmates; update necessary data base and notify appropriate management staff daily.
  4. Report Prison Rape Eliminate Act (PREA) violations, including sexual assault or sexual harassment of Inmates to designated supervisor; Complete required documentation and other required forms for submission in accordance to contract requirements.
  5. Supervise and provide custody and security of Inmates including observation of Inmates and Inmates assigned to work duty which includes long periods of sitting and standing.
  6. May participate in the supervision and may direct searches for contraband including “pat” and “strip” searches, by squatting and bending to perform such functions.
  7. Read, review and properly apply information found in Inmate records which is related to the Inmates’ health and safety and to the security of the facility.  Provide appropriate information to other personnel on a need to know basis.
  8. Supervise the preparation and maintenance of records, forms and reports to include oversight of SSPANS. 
  9. Responds to emergencies including climbing stairs, steps, and ladders while searching for escaped Inmates, hearing calls for and calling for help, giving first aid at the emergency site, carrying an injured or unconscious Inmate or employee various distances to safety up or down stairs, steps, and ladders; and use force and deadly force to include the use of chemical agents and firearms to control Inmates.
  10. Comply with policies, procedures, rules and regulations.
  11. It is expected the incumbent will work overtime when directed to do so.
  12. Regular and predictable attendance is required.
  13. Promote the development of positive social skills through modeling appropriate behaviors and intervening when inappropriate behaviors are observed; provide regular feedback to staff regarding social skills procedures and intervention techniques.
  14. Maintain accountability of staff, Inmates and property; adhere to safety practices.

It is expected that the incumbent shall perform other duties as assigned within his/her capabilities as determined by management.

Education and Experience Requirements:

Graduation from an accredited senior high school or equivalent or GED.  Two (2) years full-time, wage-earning correctional custody or law enforcement experience.  Valid driver’s license in the state of Texas with an acceptable driving record required, unless waived by management.

Post Hire Requirements:

Must successfully complete annual in-service training requirements to include physical agility testing and pass an annual background check, which must be approved by TDCJ.
